Historical Tidbit: How Did a Fuzzy Caterpillar Become a Weather Forecaster?

According to the 2020 Farmers’ Almanac: “The banded woolly bear, also known as the woolly worm caterpillar, is one of the “signs of nature” that supposedly foretells what the upcoming winter weather may be like. According to folklore, if the caterpillar’s orange band is narrow, the winter will be snowy. If the band is wide, a mild winter is predicted. And fuzzier-than-normal woolly bears mean that winter will be very cold. Caterpillar below was found in our cellar. I took it outside and it immediately uncurled and “inched” away to a safer place to wait out winter. Curled up it looks like very small sea urchins.
